Forks out! Under pressure to find her next book idea, she agrees, and resolves to secretly pen a memoir, with recipes, about the experience.

That memoir, Search , follows the travails of the committee and their candidates—and becomes its own media sensation.

Ultimately, the committee faces a stark choice between two very different paths forward for the congregation. Although she may have been ambivalent about joining the committee, Dana finds that she cares deeply about the fate of this institution and she will fight the entire committee, if necessary, to win the day for her side.

wry and thoughtful. Huneven has total command of her material. Huneven is such a smart and funny writer. The strengths of Huneven's novel lie in her deep understanding of human nature. It's fascinating to watch how skillfully Huneven moves committee members from one side to the other, and to watch, appalled, as the inevitable slowly happens.

Those scenes are a master class in group dynamics. Search is a fun read. While the book is laced with plenty of humor which Dana herself does not always see , it is laced, too, with plenty of wisdom. We can search, Huneven is saying, but you just never know what you might find.

spiced with wit. it is not quite a satire, since Huneven has too much respect for all her seekers. full of intrigue, drama, and absurdity. often laugh-out-loud funny, the story is also heartbreaking.

Search does not hold back from the sloppy and sinful moments that so often happen in our church communities, but it holds on to what lies at the core of congregational life for so many of us: fellowship, a longing for holy mystery, and working toward a better world. Sometimes this leads to hypocrisy, hubris, and disaster.

But more often, the search is in fact sincere, hilarious, and full of grace. Huneven injects humor and tension. engaging and thought-provoking. The voting, the vetting, the drama, the discord, the anti-oppression training—it's all here.

tender, salty, and worthy of note. She knows, and cherishes, the absurdity of the human spirit. And there are recipes! The alliances and betrayals along the way reveal that even when a group of people share a common passion, the path to consensus can be tortuous. With wry humor and keen moral nerve, she brings us deep into a group formed not by affinity but with a purpose—to select a new leader.

We follow the hilarious, absorbing, shocking step by step of how and why intelligent, good-minded people make an entirely surprising decision. With echoes of voices as disparate as those of Thomas McGuane and Barbara Pym, Huneven is an American original, attentive to the outscale beauties of the west and the fragility of its citizens and institutions.

The wondrous Search tells the story of a group of people whose task is to unify around an important decision, and if that sounds possible, rest assured that this droll novel will demonstrate in hilarious and painful detail all the ways in which our best intentions run afoul of how powerfully we want what we want.

It's a front row seat to a juicy in-fight that's all too familiar to anyone who's ever tried to get something done by committee. Huneven generously portrays the emotional questing that brings people into spiritual communities while also chronicling the rivalry, pettiness, and basic human failings that manifest in those communities.

The narrator of Search reflects that ministry—especially for the secular—is about asking, 'How do we live in this world? Book arrived on time in excellent condition. Many thanks! Search committees are formed, manned by hopefully smart parishioners who can seek out and evaluate ministers who would fit in and lead the church. This group meets for a year and combine the search with dinner.

She lists the recipes for the food she writes about at the back of the book. The 8 members of the committee are as varied in personalities and desires as the job candidates themselves. The reader meets everyone involved in both the search and in the ongoing running of the church. Do we need that bite or is a gentle look at a process ok?

story of. find a new pastor. My church is working on finding a new pastor. the wealth of complexity and personalities that can make. Since I have a fervent seeking nature, I was instantly drawn to this story of a committee in my native Los Angeles trying to agree on a new minister. It feels like the author wrote about what would have happened if she had not stalled the search and allowed the younger people to choose the minister.

While I believe in truth-telling, I felt very let down in the end by the false references, deep human flaws triumphing over the best in us, and the realities of churches needing to pay the bills rather than focus on the sacred and spiritual.

I have a long history with religion, and most of my friends were done with the organizational church long ago. It is unclear how the community of seekers functioning as churches can survive.

This book doused my hope of any deeply meaningful conclusion. Those of us brought up in churches, meaning almost anyone of post-WWII age, do not want to be told what to believe, how to believe, but we long for the authentic giving, familial nature of the church family we grew up with and wish to find it somehow.

Yes, a disappointed cynic here, having to remember once more that search committees, ministers and other seekers are as flawed as anyone else. Was hoping for an exceptional inspiring ending, but guess that is an unrealistic hope.

As a transitional minister, I lived several years on the other side of a search for a minister. This book is an object lesson on how NOT to constitute a search committee, and an example of a search committee that never got its act together.

If Amazon doesn't sell the book you are looking for, it's probably no longer available, or you have a fuzzier memory than you think.

You can start with the basic search bar and a keyword to name a book. But the actual book finder is Amazon's Advanced Book Search. Amazon does not have an official list of advanced search operators. But it does display a few search tips on the above page.

The API documentation lists a few power searches you can try for your book. Go through the documentation by clicking on "Next. The trick is to cut through the clutter of Amazon search results.

Try this neat Amazon advanced search tool called JungleSearch. net which can also help you fetch hidden Amazon search results.

Amazon not only matches your keywords to titles and authors but also on every word inside a book. You can discover if this is the exact book you are looking for by clicking the Look Inside link and going through the preview pages.

Then, use the Search Inside This Book field to look for sentences, key phrases, and citations. Any website which helps you discover your next book will have an online community behind it. Tap into the collective memory of book lovers on these recommended book platforms.

Goodreads is an Amazon subsidiary. So you can expect the knowledge base to be just as vast. This social network for book nerds has discussion boards on a variety of topics. You can go to any genre-specific group and ask for help.

But it might be worth trying these two first:. Want to find a romance novel description? Or that thriller you read in your childhood? The appropriately named BookSleuth is another good hunting ground for forgotten titles.

Use the community forum organized by genre, and provide as many details as possible for the members to help you out. LibraryThing is a less hip, more cerebral alternative to Goodreads. Start a new topic for your specific search in this community group and enter all the book details you can remember.

By now, you should have got either the book or your memory back. If not, your search has probably reached a frustrating hurdle because the book-loving masses haven't been able to rescue you yet.

So it's time to broaden your scope with an SOS on your social network of choice. The social network isn't only for finding long-lost friends.

You can also call upon the crowd's wisdom to help you find that elusive book. However, your social circle might be too limited, so broaden your search using book clubs.

Mark Zuckerberg started A Year of Books , and it ended at more than , followers. Smaller public groups like the Andrew Luck Book Club and Friday Reads are going strong.

Some book clubs follow a niche genre too. Start with a Twitter search. Hashtags make micro-blogging work, but the generic books or bibliophile hashtag might be too broad.

Instead, try to plug the specific genre into a hashtag search e. The best thing about Quora is that you can expect a quality response. Take the answer in the screenshot, for example. Stack Overflow might be the most popular with programmers, but there are niche communities for Ebooks and Literature.

Then, you can also go into a genre-specific community and drop a question. Sci-Fi and Fantasy is popular. You couldn't have thought of a better name for a subreddit on books than Tip of My Tongue.

Just scan your eyes down the solved answers with the green tag to understand the power of collective memory. Also, try other subreddits like What's That Book , Books , and printSF when you can only remember the cover. A Google search should be able to unearth the lost book.

But if you feel lazy, use Wikipedia as a book finder. The giant online encyclopedia has an ever-growing stockpile of the world's knowledge, so there's a chance it will also have clues on the book you can't remember the title for. The internet relies on the kindness of strangers.

The good thing is that book lovers are everywhere and the fraternity is amazingly cooperative even when finding a book using a vague description.
