Gifts and Donations Gifts of library books will be accepted in keeping with the above policy on selection. Complaints about library books will be handled in line with Committee policy on complaints about instructional materials.

The District libraries welcome donations of books and other resource materials from individuals and organizations but also reserve the right to refuse materials that do not meet the criteria for selection stated above. In addition, financial donations to benefit District libraries will be accepted with the understanding that funds will be used to purchase materials that are needed for libraries based on the needs of the individual schools.

To illustrate the range of books that could be selected, I have chosen the broad theme of social justice for middle school readers. Voice and choice: these are the ingredients for creating readers who read.

I love working with literature circles in classrooms! In my version of literature circles, the teacher chooses a collection of five or six different books. These books are chosen with every student in the class in mind; they are books each student could and would want to read.

Six copies of each book are purchased so there are enough copies for students to exchange when they finish a book.

How do we best choose our books? Should there always be a theme or a central idea to the collection? A central theme is not necessary. Get to know your students and choose books based on who they are as learners and individuals.

Choose books for a variety of reading levels, both above and below the abilities of your students. Our classrooms are rich with diverse learners.

Make sure you consider all students in creating the collection. Every student in your class must be able to find a book that they can read and would choose to read.

In a primary class, I choose the titles to use as mentor texts with the class. I then collect 15 to 20 picture books and 2 or 3 early chapter books. With an intermediate or middle school class of 30, I choose five or six titles and have five or six copies of each. It is critical that you have read all the books in the collection prior to introducing them to students.

Without your reading, you cannot engage in deep conversations. Read, read, read. Supplement literature circle themes with lessons that build motivation and background knowledge for students.

Once the books are chosen, marketing of the books is important. ALL students need to see one or two choices that are great matches for them.

Some students will read all the books you have chosen, while some may only read two. Using these principles, I have chosen possible texts around the broad theme of social justice.

Social justice has been my lifetime passion. What motivates me is the search for justice and equity, being mindful of the impact of wealth, opportunity, and privilege within a society.

We are becoming more conscious of how what we do and think, and how we speak and listen every day impact those around us. Social justice issues exist locally, within Canada, and globally. Well-chosen texts can help learners of all ages build awareness of and consider ways to improve justice for all.

By considering a range of criteria in selection, public libraries will be able to create a collection that serves the community and makes the best use of their resources. There are some general criteria for selection that apply, but each organization will need to determine the relative importance of these criteria for their community.

Public libraries are diverse and represent a broad demographic. With a patron base that can include infants to the elderly, selection criteria should take into account the various interests and needs of the patrons the library serves. In general, public libraries provide collections containing a wide variety of material formats, including print, audio-visual, and electronic.

In selecting materials and developing collections for adults, as well as for children and teens, library staff includes materials that represent the broad range of human experience, reflecting the ethnic, religious, racial, and socio-economic diversity not only of the region it serves but also the larger global perspective.

Library collections will provide a broad range of opinion on current issues. Collections contain popular works, classic works that have withstood the test of time, and other materials of general interest. Works are not excluded or included in the collection based solely on subject matter or on political, religious, or ideological grounds.

In building collections, library staff is guided by the principle of selection, rather than censorship. To build a collection of merit, materials are evaluated according to one or more of the following standards.

An item need not meet all of these criteria in order to be acceptable. School libraries vary and include libraries in public schools, charter schools, independent private schools, schools with religious affiliations, and international schools based in countries outside the United States.

Criteria for selection of materials in these libraries are dependent on the goals and objectives of the educational institution of which the library is a part of; however, there are general criteria that will fit most, if not all, school libraries.

Academic libraries vary and include large university libraries, small special collection libraries, and academic libraries in colleges.
