We looked at three of the most popular national grocers with at least some form of delivery -- Amazon Fresh , Target and Walmart. In the end, Walmart nabbed the top spot as the cheapest place to buy groceries online.

If it's rare ingredients and gourmet goods you're after, these are the best places to buy specialty items online.

For budget basics and staples at affordable prices, look below for the full breakdown of Walmart, Target and Amazon Fresh to find the absolute cheapest groceries online. Walmart is well-known for having some of the lowest prices of any national retail chain.

In this analysis of the cheapest online grocery delivery operations, its budget-friendly reputation held up. Many of Walmart's cheapest items come courtesy of its in-house brand, Great Value. To find the cost of buying groceries online at these three retailers, I first generated a list of 37 popular grocery items -- some name brands, some generic -- on the same day and in every grocery category including bread, snacks, dairy, produce, meat, fish, beverages and pantry staples.

I mostly avoided specialty items and organic ingredients for this exercise. For each product, I chose the cheapest available option from all three retailers: Amazon Fresh, Target and Walmart. If an item wasn't available at one retailer, I selected the next closest thing, since that's what a shopper would likely do.

Many of the prices are for the Food Lion brand or the "cha-ching" brand. Harris Teeter prices were found on the Harris Teeter website for the Raleigh store at North Hills. Lowes Foods prices were found on the Lowes Foods website in their online shopping portal for the Brier Creek location in Raleigh using the Pick-Up option.

Walmart prices were found on the Walmart website for the Raleigh store at New Bern Ave. for pick-up. Wegmans prices were found on the Wegmans website for the Raleigh store at Wake Towne Drive for in-store shopping. The prices in the tracker usually reflect store-brand items.

The only time a non-store brand product was selected was when a store brand item was not available or a name brand item was a better price than the store brand.

In that case, we selected the least expensive item. To get the best price each week at the stores you shop, make sure you scan your reward card or use your phone number linked to your reward card at checkout.

Keep in mind that some grocery stores have fuel rewards programs that allow you to save money on gas at their stations when you buy groceries, which can help you decrease overall living expenses even more. If the grocery store you shop at offers fuel rewards, be sure to take advantage of the additional savings.

You'll also get Amazon Prime Video and a few other perks. As of Feb. All three offer free in-store pickup in some form, although Amazon has fewer locations than Walmart and Target.

Target-owned Shipt will send groceries to your door in a matter of hours but there are some staples, including meat, not available for delivery. While I tried to use only items that were available for delivery, it wasn't always possible. Target and its national shipping partner Shipt don't have every grocery staple available for shipping, particularly fresh meats and some produce.

If you want to shop for your full list of groceries at Target, you're likely going to have to visit a brick-and-mortar location.

In general, Walmart and Target offer the same prices online as they do in brick-and-mortar locations, but not always. Sales items, in particular, are not always coordinated between online and in-store. Amazon Fresh is mostly online-only save for a few locations, although many products on Amazon Fresh can also be found at Whole Foods.

Hungryroot is a cross between a grocery delivery service and meal kit company and encourages you to go rogue from the recipe.

Instacart is a popular national delivery service and functions as a third-party shopper and delivery outfit that allows you to order groceries from a selection of local supermarkets. Fresh Direct is another popular grocery delivery service and one of my favorites.

It's currently only available in the Northeast. The prices here are a bit higher than the three retailers I analyzed above, but the grocery selection and customer service are both excellent. Hungryroot is a quirky grocery delivery operation that functions differently than the others.

With a subscription, you'll get weekly deliveries of curated groceries based on your preferences and eating habits. Hungryroot also populates recipe ideas when ordering and will send you the ingredients to make them if you so choose. Thrive Market is yet another members-only grocery service.

You're not going to find Food4Less everywhere — the company, which is owned by grocery magnate Kroger, only operates in three states Indiana, Illinois, and California. But if you do happen to live near one of the chain's locations, you can benefit from the lower-than-average prices you'll find there.

Grocery Outlet is one of those stores that you have to shop at at least once if you love finding fantastic deals on groceries. There, you'll find consistently low prices to help you cut your grocery budget for good.

As the name suggests, this chain is an outlet. Basically, when a producer makes too much of a product that it can't otherwise sell, it contacts Grocery Outlet, which then buys the product for a reduced price.

That's how the store passes those savings on to you — it pays less for its products so you can too. Unlike some budget grocery chains, you'll find different products at every Grocery Outlet you go to, depending on what that particular store has access to.

You're not going to find many grocery stores that offer prices lower than 99 Cents Only Stores. When the company was started, everything was offered for only 99 cents.

Of course, times have changed, and now, the name of the store is a slight misnomer — sometimes, you'll pay more than 99 cents for a product there and sometimes, you'll also pay less. Still, you can almost guarantee that you are going to get a great deal when you shop at these stores, which are currently only found in four states.

You can shop for produce here as well as a variety of other grocery products, although it can sometimes be difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. On the bright side, it's kind of a treasure-hunting experience — you'll never know what you'll find for cheap when you set foot inside one of these stores.

If you're the kind of person who's always on the hunt for a good deal, 99 Cents Only Stores undoubtedly make for an exciting shopping experience. When you're pinching your pennies, going to a traditional grocery store may not be the most cost-effective way to buy groceries.

Instead, heading to a dollar store like Family Dollar may just be the way to go. The only time a non-store brand product was selected was when a store brand item was not available or a name brand item was a better price than the store brand.
