Hemp thread by Hemptique. I love this brand but any craft thread should be fine. Something to press down the folds of paper with - I use a top of a jar, or candle base. Acrylic Inks. Choose colors you want for your backgrounds, more if you want to have different colors.

I also add a little white high flow paint to mix. Substitutions: fluid paint, or homemade fluid paint link to DYI video below. Amsterdam Yellowish Green, Daler-Rowney Turquoise, Daler-Rowney Magenta, Daler-Rowney Purple. King Art Brushes mixed media paintbrush kit.

Sponge Brushes. Old brush for gluing. Heat dryer by Ranger or hairdryer. Spray bottle of water. Scissors - these small ones are great. In addition to the journal, brushes, and scissors from above, here is a list of mixed media supplies that I love!

Plus start to gather bits of collage pieces; handmade art paper, kids artwork, vellum, ephemera, magazine or catalog clippings, photos to print choose laser print rather than ink-jet , or any other bits of things you want to add!

Wax Crayons. I love painting and drawing with these crayons, just make sure you choose water-soluble so you can use wet. If you are lucky to visit an art supply store you can usually find the Neo Colors and wax crayons as singles, or you can find sets online.

My top 5 is 1 paper of any kind scrap booking to wall papers. I love being green. Hi fellow art journalists. I am new to this particular craft. I am really enjoying it.

So far I have just used pencils and colored pens. But I plan to add colored pencils. I actually started with wanting to learn calligraphy. And every search brought me to this course. So I clicked on it and here we are. Thank you so much for this course. I am looking forward to more courses.

My top five would be my Prismacolor pencils, Neo watercolour crayons, gesso, Prismacolor permanent markers, glue stick. It is really hard to stick to five.

I am like a magpie and have quite a stash. I acquire cheap stuff and sometimes people give me bits and pieces when they are moving and so on. I have to try to keep this lot tidy and use everything. I like making a lot of mess in my journal.

i purchased a moleskine diary for my bullet journal but I think for the next one I would be keener on using a plain maths book because I personally dont like the moleskine. for art journaling I use a mix media book which i love.

i love pitt brush markers they are so versatile for my journaling needs and something that has become a staple in my journaling. I havnt yet found whether I prefer acrylic or watercolor paints I think its going to take more playing around.

I have also heard alot of hype about the prismacolor pencils in journaling and they are great but due to cost I have had to look for a cheaper equivalent and I quite like the Jasart Watercolor Pencils. I would also put gesso and gel medium in the always use list as well.

I am really enjoying the lessons. For my first five things I reach for when I begin, 1. Staz on ink pads with dauber 2 things sorry. Gelattos 3. Tombo pens 4. Gesso I use Golden for its smooth texture 5. Baby wipes. I also usually use Stencil Girl stencils and YES paste glue.

So many things to love about supplies! Jim Holtz Distress Crayons 2. Fine Touch Gouache paints 3. Chanson mixed media notebook 4. Felteez fine top markers 5. Studio Series fine line marker set. Micron pens 3.

Watercolors 4. Paint pens 5. Glue or gel medium for collaging. Great list! If I had to choose only five supplies to use? However, I would choose: acrylic paint, brushes, various papers for collage , glue, and stencils. Take care! Hi Gina! Hope that helps! I am so glad I found you.

I seem to be late to the party. My favorite five are 1. Altered book 2. Homemade shimmer mists 4. Magazine and book images 5. Computer generated text and ANYTHING recycled. My favorite five would be paints, stencils, black and white pens, watercolor brush pens and old books. Your email address will not be published.

Gesso Gesso is basically a primer to get your surface ready to add paint. Tape I had to throw this one in here… I just love tape!

Miscellaneous Tools You always have your fingers to use, but sometimes having a specific tool just makes things a little bit easier. If they are too cheaply made, they will shed hair onto your work. spray bottles — Spray water directly onto your wet paint to make it drip, or fill the spray bottle with watered down paint.

pallet knife — You can use these to mix your paints, stir your mediums, apply paint to your surface area, etc. scissors exacto knife hair dryer or heat gun — Use a dryer to dry your layers of paint faster! brayer — A brayer is a printmaking tool with a handle and a roller.

It is fun to use to apply paint, or it can also be used to ensure a good seal when gluing down ephemera. sealant — Its always a good idea to seal mediums that are water soluble, or mediums that may rub off onto the facing page when your book is closed. You can use gel medium, but I prefer to use a workable fixative spray.

It seals the page, but you can still work on top of it after it dries if you need to. Don't miss a single, inspiring thing! Now check your email to confirm your subscription.

I mostly use them to apply ink to the paper. Ink is more gentle well, just different than acrylics, and you get a soft dreamy look with the make-up sponge and ink combo.

You can color the whole page like this, by gently making circles with the sponge until you like the effect. This technique is also great for coloring the margins of a page so your page is framed with beautiful color. Combining this sponge, ink and a stencil works perfectly. It gets even prettier if you combine two ink colors and mix them to get a gradient.

Well, tell your man not to throw them away. I dig you, sister. Either way, just remind him to keep a few. Use them to create beautiful distressed circles! Just dip the roll in acrylic paint and stamp away!

Or, cut the roll in half and make a U-shape. The purpose is similar to the one with the toilet paper rolls. Just dip the cap in acrylic paint and then stamp it onto the paper.

But, the messier, the better. You might have an old shoebox or a notebook cover you no longer need. You can use it to apply paint.

Make straight thin lines with it by dabbing the paint onto the paper. Or use it as a craft spatula and apply paint. It looks worn out. Definitely one of my favorites.

Well, pop just a few to indulge your inner child, and paint the rest with acrylics.

Again, over time you will build up your own range of brushes and learn what you enjoy using. These are for the writing part of art journaling, I recommend a pen that you feel comfortable writing with, some hard pencils, and even coloured pencils are great to use for writing.

I love using brush pens that you can find at most craft stores , I buy cheap ones so that I am not afraid to ruin them when I write over wet paint!

You could try a fine liner or gel pens or even a Sharpie. You may want to experiment with permanent and non permanent pens to see the different effects you get.

Building up a stash of old magazines is the best thing you can do to enhance your art journaling supplies kit if storage is a problem you can go through the magazine, tear out the pages you like and throw the rest away Magazines are great for the imagery, the text and varied fonts, collage elements, and for creating quick backgrounds with.

Gesso is a medium used to prepare your pages for wet media - such as watery paint. Gesso is a must if you choose to use an old book for an art journal - you will want to cover the pages in gesso before painting on top of them.

You can buy clear or white Gesso - you can also add a tiny bit of paint to your Gesso to colour it - not too much though! I love creating with watery media, such as acrylic, watercolour, coffee, spraying water over paint, so I use Gesso a lot, I enjoy the smooth texture for writing on and also scraping lines and texture into it.

Chalk pastels and oil pastels are two of my favourite supplies, again they are just a cheap boxes that I get from a craft store. Pastels are great for adding texture, interest and pattern details to final layers of a page.

You can create some amazing results using oil pastel and watercolour as it creates a resist effect. Pastels are definitely a medium that you should spend some time experimenting with and learning different ways they can be used. One of the ways I like to use pastels is for quickly capturing a colour palette - when I see a collection of colours that I like, I simply scribble down 5 or so colours on a sheet in my little colour library notebook for future reference.

I was definitely late to the washi tape party, but I love using it. I use washi tape mostly just for sticking in things that I find and want to keep safe in my journal. I do also use it when making my own journals and piecing together different papers. You could also use it as a decorative item on its own or to frame parts of your page.

Washi tape peels off easily and can be covered in paint too, which is great for art journaling. Starting a collection of ephemera is the best thing you can do to enhance your journal pages as you progress through your art journaling journey.

Be on the hunt for ephemera through out your day, collect things you use to re-purpose in your journal at a later date. You could scour second hand and antique shops for pieces too.
