Rising temperatures and extreme heat , for example, are destroying crops and contributing to sky-rocketing prices on goods such as coffee and olive oil.

Flashy deals and buy-one-get-one promotions are appealing, but they should be considered within the larger structure and context of price increases, as the report points out. While the prices are not expected to decline, they are likely to decelerate, however.

Besides the grocery checkout counter, consumers are feeling the pinch at restaurants. The number of restaurant diners has dropped significantly so far this year, according to a survey of people last month by Revenue Management Solutions.

Most of the respondents said they feel they are paying more at restaurants, resulting in them cutting back on visits, ordering fewer items and choosing less expensive restaurants. The findings of another survey indicate that restaurants are right to prioritize offers. The survey of 2, people, which was conducted earlier this year for PYMENTS , shows that one in four fast-food customers seek deals when deciding where to eat.

Supermarkets face criticism for these marketing tactics because, although they may motivate shoppers to buy more than they intended, they may also motivate them to buy more than they need, which presumably results in waste.

Esade researchers Marco Bertini and Julia von Schuckmann partnered with Netherlands-based university associates Arjen van Lin Tilburg University , Aylin Aydinli Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam , and Erica van Herpen Wageningen University , to test this question in a systematic way.

With funding from the EU's Horizon Research and Innovation Programme, they collaborated with AiMark and GfK to build a unique data set combining their 10,household scanner panel data with survey data from a specially-made questionnaire.

Specifically, in a natural experiment spanning nine weeks, the panel households shopping at Albert Heijn the largest supermarket retailer in the Netherlands , encountered eight perishable foods sold at regular price, at a straight discount, or on a multibuy.

Households then reported how these products were ultimately used, including whether any portion was thrown away. The research particularly focused on these perishable items because they were basic household staples like vegetables and bread that are often wasted, and because they would need to be eaten or frozen within a reasonably short period which simplified measurement.

Households that purchased under multibuys wasted less than households that purchased at regular prices. After matching samples to control for factors such as household size, income, and age, as well as declared attitudes to waste and frugality, the researchers concluded that discounted and multibuy purchases did not contribute to increased food wastage.

In fact, households that purchased under multibuys wasted less than households that purchased at regular prices. What did households in this experiment do with the extra food, now that we know they didn't let it spoil and throw it out?

It seems they either ate more of it than usual, or they stored it. For marketers trying to sell food in a responsible way , this is a crucial finding. It highlights that many intuitive ideas about why people buy and eat food might be wrong.

Diverse factors nudge shoppers toward one type of purchase over another: from seasonal price variations, expiration dates, or a preference for healthy choices.

However, most of the previous research in this area was about how much people bought under different conditions — not what happened to the purchase afterwards. We have plenty of data on how promotions encourage people to buy, because this is what marketers are interested in.

Price promotions are retail promotions that offer discounted pricing on selected products for a temporary period of time. Food Foundation analysis found that very few price promotions are on healthier foods. Just 3. Government regulations on HFSS products have so far focused on where products are placed in stores and on limiting multibuys, though this second measure has been pushed down the line to October Government and retailers therefore should look at both price promotions and multi-buys when aiming to shift sales towards healthier foods.

The Kids Food Guarantee has been monitoring and reporting on prevalence of multibuy offers on healthy vs. unhealthy products since April This latest update finds that retailers have taken little action to place deals on staple carbohydrates or fruit and vegetables.

There has, in fact, been a slight decrease in the proportion of multibuys on fruit and vegetables from 4. With government regulation on HFSS multibuys postponed, retailers are continuing to focus their promotional spend on HFSS food and drinks, with over a quarter This has barely changed since July when The higher price of healthier calories relative to less healthy calories means it is already more challenging for citizens struggling with the cost of living to afford a healthy diet, especially those from low income groups.

The current distribution of price promotions and multibuys do not help with the affordability of basic, staple, nutritious foods.

For example, promotions could support families to buy staple carbohydrates such as bread and rice, as well as fruit and veg, milk and eggs. Both government and retailers ought to look at what can be done to ensure such deals are on healthier food and drink as part of efforts to shift sales towards healthier foods.

The majority of UK retailers now report on and have targets in place to achieve a higher proportion of healthier sales. Promotional spend will need to align with these targets if they are to be met.
